Not every tree needs pruning. That’s the first thing we tell clients, because unnecessary work, however well-intentioned, can stress a tree and cause lasting damage that takes years to become visible. At DB Tree Care, we only prescribe work we believe the tree can physiologically tolerate, and we will always be honest if leaving a tree alone is the better option.
When pruning is the right course of action, precision is everything. Every cut should be made back to the branch bark collar, the natural boundary where branch meets stem, leaving a clean wound the tree can close efficiently. Stub cuts, flush cuts, and tears compromise that process, creating entry points for decay fungi and structurally weakening the tree over time. Understanding where and how to cut requires a genuine knowledge of how trees grow, compartmentalise decay, and respond to wounding, and that knowledge underpins everything we do.

Dead Wooding (Crown Cleaning)
Removing dead, dying, and diseased branches from the canopy. Dead wood poses a safety risk if it falls, and can be a point of entry for secondary fungal infections. Regular crown cleaning extends the life of a tree significantly.
Crown Thinning
Selectively removing branches throughout the canopy to allow more light and air to pass through. Particularly beneficial for large, dense canopies over gardens and buildings.
Crown Lifting
Removing lower branches to raise the crown above a set height; useful for access, sight lines, and light beneath the tree.

The Importance of Correct Pruning
Pruning done incorrectly can cause more harm than good. Flush cuts, stubs, and ‘topping’ (the indiscriminate removal of large portions of the crown) create large wounds that are slow to close, provide entry points for decay fungi, and lead to weak, structurally compromised regrowth. Dominic’s understanding of tree physiology and fungal pathology means that every cut we make is considered, purposeful, and in the best interests of the tree’s long-term health.
Dead Wood and Wildlife
Not all dead wood should be removed. Retained dead wood in the canopy and on the stem provides valuable habitat for insects, fungi, woodpeckers, and other wildlife.
